Reagent-oxidant
[Hydroxy(tosyloxy)iodo]benzene is a versatile reagent for mild oxidation. It is a white solid, which may be stored at room temperature, but for a long time, it is better to keep it refrigerated and in a dark bottle. Reagent is moderately soluble in H2O, MeOH, DMSO, and insoluble in Et2O, CH2Cl2, and CHCl3. Although hydroxy(tosyloxy)iodobenzene is largely insoluble in DCM or chloroform both are excellent solvents for the reaction with HTIB reactions because the completion of the reaction can be visible when all solid phases disappear. Reagent employed in α-oxidation of carbonyl compounds, oxidation of olefins, ring contractions, and expansions, dearomatization of phenols, and synthesis of iodonium salts.
